George Galayda

Passed away March 4, 2011, Age 84, in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, by dear Andrew and Mary Galayda, both deceased. Graduated from James Ford Rhodes High School on “D” Day, 1944. Served in Europe during WWII, 2 Battle Stars, Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star. 3rd Battalion. 302nd Infantry Regiment, 94th Infantry Division, General Patton’s 3rd Army. After combat ceased, was part of the 302nd’s Regimental Chorus in Czechoslovakia, Rev. Capt. D. Small, Sponsor. Graduated from The Ohio State University in 1951 as Bachelor of Architecture. First licensed to practice in Ohio, then nationally. Project Architect for the Supersonic Test Chamber and Shop Buildings at Cleveland’s Hopkins Airport for NACA. Later specialized in hospitals and medical school facilities. Was Executive Architect and Designer for Western Reserve University’s new Medical School, Dr. D. Bond, Dean; and Consulting Executive Architect for Wayne State University’s new Medical School, Scott Hall, Dr. E. Gardner, Dean, and Dr. G. Scott, V.P. Was appointed by Mayor Cavanaugh to serve on a blue ribbon committee to save Detroit General Hospital. Employed by several prominent firms, one being Abram Garfield’s, Garfield, Harris, Robinson & Schafer where he was Project Architect for Ohio State University’s 14 story cancer research addition and for Wooster College’s new Library. Helped establish his own firm in 1973 with 3 other partners, R. James, D. Scheible and J. Zaccagni. Was Architect for many projects for The People’s Community Hospital Authority, J. Gielniak, PCHA Architect and for Saratoga Community Hospital, M. Breen, President. He was also Treasurer, then President of Courtside Villas Council of Co-Owners, Inc. at Kiawah Island, SC for many years. He authored and published, “Architecture: The People, The Practice, The Business” in 1996. He was the beloved husband of his wife, Sue, and loving father of his 3 adult children Karen L., George A.(Janeva), Michael A.(Colette) and the late Steven G, and 4 grandchildren; brother to Mary A., deceased, (William)Quayle and families, and John A. (Anna, deceased) and their 2 adult children and families, and other cousins and their families. He enjoyed being with them and his friends, associates and golfers over the many years. The family would like to thank Dr. A. Ahmed and Dr. K. Champion for all of their kind and compassionate care. Memorials can be made to the Salvation Army or the charity of choice. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
