Edgar Louis Malm

Edgar Louis Malm, a devoted husband, loving father, cherished grandfather and great-grandfather peacefully departed this life on March 20th, 2024, after a valiant battle with Alzheimer’s lasting nearly a decade. He was 89 years old. Born on February 13th, 1935, Ed's life included an honorable discharge on May 27th, 1963 as a Sergeant E5 Carbine Expert in the National Guard. He had a long successful career as a dispatcher and eventual terminal manager in the automotive transport industry in the Detroit area. His intelligence and good humor were only matched by his commitment to hard work and his love for the piano. His talent and passion for the piano were evident from a young age, setting the stage for a lifetime of heartwarming performances and heartfelt family gatherings. Ed (aka, Gar and Fast Eddy) was a devoted father, imparting his beliefs and morals as well as his love for music and life's most profound lessons to his children. He shared a special bond with his daughter Donna, who inherited his passion for the piano. Their duets echoed through the halls of their home, a testament to the enduring power of music to unite hearts and souls. Ed's family was his greatest joy, and he treasured every moment spent with his wife, his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild. He found solace in their presence and their love providing comfort and strength during his battle with Alzheimer’s. Ed was preceded in death by his parents Edgar and Antoniette Malm as well as his eldest daughter, Julie (husband Jim Ziraldo). He is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years Carol Malm; his devoted daughter, Donna, and her husband, Guy O'Hair; his son, John, and his wife, Debra Malm; and his adored grandchildren and great-grandchild; Allison Ziraldo, Katie Ziraldo (husband Jake Carnes), Douglas O'Hair (wife Mary), Mitchell O'Hair, Denise Malm, Kassandra Malm and newest addition, great-grandchild Seamus O’Hair. Ed's legacy of love, resilience, and music will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. Though he may be gone, his classical sonnets and ragtime melodies will live on in the hearts of those who knew him and loved him, a timeless tribute to a life well-lived. A gathering of family and friends will be held on Monday March 25th at O’Brien & Sullivan Funeral Home located at 41555 Grand River Ave. in Novi Michigan from 4pm – 7pm. A private burial for immediate family will follow on Tuesday the 26th at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, his final place of rest. Family and friends will be invited to a semi-private luncheon following the burial at the home of Ed & Carol Malm. In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, supporting research and care for those affected by this debilitating disease, in honor of Ed's courageous long-term battle. As the final notes of his life's symphony fade into eternity, Edgar Louis Malm will be remembered not for the illness that claimed his mind but for the music that stirred his soul and touched the hearts of all who knew him. May he rest in peace, his melodies echoing in the heavens above.
